Whatever you put on our skin, it will likely absorb 70% of it, especially if the particles are small. It is your biggest organ and it protects your body. Not all ingredients that are approved for use in cosmetics are healthy for you. There are many ingredients to avoid in skincare. Many people are plagued with allergies, eczema, rashes and other skin irritations without knowing where these came from. It is most likely that they are caused by products that are supposed to make us prettier. Unfortunately these products often fool us by smelling good and foaming nicely and making our hair and skin feel super soft and shiny. But this fake cover usually just lasts for a few hours. Afterwards the skin gets dry and irritated so we use even more products, thus accumulating a decent amount of toxins, pesticides, carcinogens, plasticizers, and other gross stuff. You may argue that the amounts are small, but if you add up products and time it may have an impact on your health and your looks. So try to avoid it as much as possible.
Here is a list of all ingredients you need to avoid in your skincare routine:
Aluminium: Aluminium is found in most deodorants and it is causing breast cancer. Crystal deodorants don’t contain Aluminum Chlorohydrate or Aluminum Zirconium which is in most other deodorants but they do contain Alum, which is a form of Aluminium and is said to cause Alzheimer’s disease and cancer. Although, some people argue that this type of Aluminium can’t actually be absorbed by the body.
Benzoyl Peroxide: It can be found in acne products. It is an eye, skin and respiratory irritant, it is toxic by inhalation and a possible tumor promoter. It may act as mutagen and produces DNA damage in human and other mammalian cells in some concentrations.
DEA: This foam booster is a skin/eye irritant and causes contact dermatitis. Easily absorbed through skin to accumulate in body organs, even the brain. Repeated use resulted in major increases of liver and kidney cancer.
Dioxin: Do you remember Ukrainian President Yushchenko who suffered from dioxin poisoning? His face was completely destroyed afterwards. Dioxin can be found as by-product in ingredients like triclosan, emulsifiers, PEGs, and Sodium Laureth Sulfate.
FD&C Color & Pigments: Synthetic colors from coal tar contain heavy metal salts that deposit toxins in skin, causing skin sensitivity and irritation. Animal studies show almost all are carcinogenic.
Mineral Oils: They are clogging pores and creating a build-up of toxins. They also slow cellular development, which can cause you to show earlier signs of aging.
Parabens: They’re used in many body lotions, shower gels, deodorants and sunscreens and have been found in breast cancer tumors. Parabens are hormone disruptors and may contribute to sterility in men and hormone imbalance and early puberty in women.
PEG (Polyethylene glycol): PEGs are in everything including personal care, baby care and sunscreens. Dangerous levels of dioxin have been found as a by-product of the ethoxylation process.
Phthalates: Xenoestrogens are commonly found in many products, usually not listed on labels. Health effects include damage to liver/kidneys, birth defects, decreased sperm counts and early breast development in girls and boys.
Propylene Glycol (PG) : Petroleum plastics act as surfactants (wetting agents, solvents). EPA considers PG so toxic it requires protective gloves, clothing, goggles and disposal by burying. Because PG penetrates skin so quickly, the Environmental Protection Agency warns against skin contact to prevent brain, liver, and kidney abnormalities. There is NO warning label on products where concentration is greater than in most industrial applications.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES): Used in most skin care products that foam such as shampoos and shaving gels. And it is also used in car washes, in floor cleaners, and degreasers – yikes. It may damage the skin’s immune system by causing layers to separate, inflame and age.
Triclosan: Synthetic “antibacterial” ingredient which is registered as a pesticide. Carcinogen.
Urea: It may release formaldehyde which causes joint pain, cancer, skin irritations, allergies, depression, headaches, chest pains, ear infections, chronic fatigue, dizziness, and loss of sleep. Exposure may irritate the respiratory system, trigger heart palpitations or asthma, aggravate coughs and colds.
